“And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed”- Gen. 12:3
It is a wonderful feeling to be blessed and be a blessing to someone.
God has wonderful blessings and unlimited goodness as His stock in trade. It is God’s blessing that brings quality to our lives. It avails us the much needed prosperity, fruitfulness, family, nourishment, growth, nurture, love, and well-being that we require for the sufficiency of life’s necessities. Good enough, it is God’s desire that we receive His blessings and so when we ask Him to bless us, we are actually asking for what He desires to give us! “Ask and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For everyone that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.” Matt. 7:7-8. God daily loads us with His abundant blessings, hence the load of diverse testimonies we hear regularly in church. It is however; important to note that God’s blessings is not limited to finances alone, but includes every aspect of life. His greatest blessing is the forgiveness of sins! Romans 4:7-8 says, “Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him.”
Often times when we are blessed, we feel we have earned it because we believe that we deserve to be blessed. It is true that being a child of God opens us up to His blessings, but it is necessary to know the purpose of divine blessings so that they would not be abused. So, what is God up to when He blesses us?
HE BLESSES TO ESTABLISH HIS COVENANT
“But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day”-Deut. 8:18. God’s blessings in your life is a proof of the validity of the unbreakable covenant God first made with Abraham, and which you became a part of when you became born again(Ps.89:34;Jer. 33:25-26).
God blesses in diverse ways. He blesses through divine favour (Ex. 3:21), the works of your hand (Prov. 10:4; Ps. 1:3), through divine ideas (Mal. 3:8), and in phases (Mk. 4:28; 2Cor. 4:17; Matt. 13:8). As you experience His blessings this season, everything will respond in your favour and divine ideas will distinguish the works of your hands in Jesus’ name.
HE BLESSES SO YOU CAN BE A BLESSING
“And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing”-Gen. 12:2. If you stop being a blessing, the channels of blessings coming your way will be closed. Being blessed and refusing to give out is like having a wonderful dinner with our President Jonathan and refusing to visit the toilet for days, simply because you want to keep the memory of the meal. The consequence will be constipation that will make life uncomfortable and unbearable until the blessing is dispersed.
“…Thus saith the Lord of hosts; my cities through prosperity shall be spread abroad…”Zech. 1:17. You are not only blessed to be a blessing, you must be a blessing according to the level to which you have been blessed. An elephant that excretes like a rat will soon die. God expects a commensurate level of outflow of the blessings he has given you to others. When your offering is less than your capacity, you are robbing God and punishing yourself (Mal. 3:8).Note that God minds quality (Mal.1:5) and quality is not necessarily in terms of volume, but in value. This is why Jesus described the poor widow’s mites as being much more than the volumes the rich people gave(Mk.12:41-44).She gave her entire livelihood, whereas the rich gave what could be considered as excess change.
It is the giving process that keeps the blessing channels open perpetually (Prov. 11:24; Isa. 60:11); little wonder Paul the Apostle said that it is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35).
HE BLESSES SO YOU CAN ABIDE
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”-Ps. 23:6. God is blessing the church so He can keep His sons and daughters at home. When goodness and mercy are always following you, it becomes impossible to be distracted from God and go in search of any other things. That is why He wishes prosperity for us above all else (3Jn.2).May the blessings of God establish and settle you this season so much that you won’t have need of any alternatives in Jesus’ name.
HE BLESSES TO KEEP YOU FROM EVIL
“Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good”Isa.7:15. While it is true that a beggar has no choice, God blesses His children so they can become men and women of choice in this evil world. Poverty makes it easy to fall into the temptation of stealing (Prov. 30:8-9) but when you are blessed, there is no reason to steal what you already have. The voice of the poor is not heard and his wisdom is despised (Eccl. 9:16) but the voice of the blessed is always with power. God blesses us so we can enjoy living in the good and refusing the evil.
May the reasons God is blessing you be accomplished in you and through you in Jesus’ name. Amen.
